Amazing - Facebook manipulated users' moods in secret experiment to show bad moods spread

Users freaked out as the social network revealed they'd been messing with their news feeds to try and affect their emotional state

Hundreds of thousands of Facebook users were stunned to learn the social network had been manipulating their emotional state without their knowledge as part of a massive secret psychological experiment.

Scientists working for the social network made users into lab rats for a week in January 2012, to see if meddling with the posts they saw when they logged in would change their emotions.

The study found that by messing with the news feeds of 689,003 users, researchers could change the kind of status updates they'd make.

If they were shown more negative posts from friends, the users would make more negative status posts, and the other way around.

The research paper, released in the PNAS journal this week, reads: "emotional states can be transferred to others via emotional contagion, leading people to experience the same emotions without their awareness."

It's not a huge change - just one-tenth of a percent difference - but that could mean hundreds of thousands of status updates a day.

Facebook's terms and conditions, which all users agree to, allow them to carry out research of this kind without telling users they're being experimented on.

The paper says the automated testing: "“was consistent with Facebook’s Data Use Policy, to which all users agree prior to creating an account on Facebook, constituting informed consent for this research.”

The researchers say they weren't able to see individual users posts at any time, and the positive and negative posts were selected automatically.

In a statement, the social network defended the research.

"This research was conducted for a single week in 2012 and none of the data used was associated with a specific person's Facebook account," they said.

"We do research to improve our services and to make the content people see on Facebook as relevant and engaging as possible. A big part of this is understanding how people respond to different types of content, whether it's positive or negative in tone, news from friends, or information from pages they follow. We carefully consider what research we do and have a strong internal review process."

Past research has suggested that infidelity is one of the leading causes of divorce. But what drives a person to become unfaithful?

Thanks to a new study published in Contemporary Family Therapy, we now have an inside look into why married women cheat.

Researchers Michelle Jeanfreau, Anthony Jurich, and Michael Mong conducted case studies on four women aged 24 to 51 who cheated on their spouses and whose marriages subsequently ended in divorce. Through in-depth analysis, researchers discovered three common risk factors that contributed to the infidelity.

1. Lack of quality time.

According to the study, all four women expressed a desire to spend more time with their husbands but were often denied, making them feel like a second or third priority to their husbands’ jobs or social lives.

Bella, 48, began her affair three years into her marriage and said she often felt anger toward her husband for leaving her constantly. ‘‘After we had our first child, he’d come in from work, take his bath. I had supper ready, [he'd take] a little nap, get up and go out partying all the time and leave me home with the kids.’’

Similarly, 36-year-old Kate, who cheated on her husband after five years of marriage, said their lack of together time led to constant fighting. "He started coming in late at night, and he would leave early in the mornings and it's like we never saw each other," she explained to researchers. "We would always argue. I wanted him to spend more time with me and he would always make other plans ... do his own thing."

The women, as the researchers explained, felt their husbands were not reciprocating the same level of desire to maintain a strong connection in the marriage, which made them susceptible to finding that connection elsewhere.

2. Inability to resolve conflict.

An inability to communicate often leads to relationship conflicts going unresolved. In these particular cases, the lack of resolution or change in future behavior left the women feeling frustrated, and many voiced a concern that while problems were recognized, no progress was made to fix them.

‘‘We would try and he would say, you know, I’m (going) to do better….and he never would," said Kate.

Linda, 51, who divorced after 21 years of marriage but started cheating just six years in, said she and her ex simply failed to address the root of their conflicts. ‘‘I’d usually just leave until he cooled off and then I’d come back and pout and not say nothing to him.’’

The researchers concluded that a lack of communication was a precursor to cheating: "In each case, the attraction to marital infidelity began to grow for the women because the unresolved issues continued to be a source of conflict in the marital relationship, pushing the women further away from their spouses."

3. Lack of attention.

Through the study, it became clear that all the women craved more intimacy in their marriages. This void was eventually filled by an affair partner.

Bella began thinking about an affair when "somebody started showing me the affection that I needed….the touching and feeling and being wanted.’’

Zoie, 24, who began cheating just seven months into her marriage, said that her husband wouldn't give her even five minutes of attention, whereas her affair partner would talk to her about anything and everything.

Linda, however, summed up the women's desires best. "I want somebody in my life that would love me for me. That would just show attention to me for me…And you know made me feel like I was worthwhile. It was just somebody there to have attention with, show me attention…make me feel better about myself," she said.

What does it all mean?

According to the researchers, none of the women actively sought out affairs. As time went on, however, they grew more frustrated in their marriages and the partner they cheated with became more desirable. When the opportunity arose, there was less hesitation to stray.

Of course, every marriage is different, but the authors of the study note that these specific insights into cheating could help people and professionals identify early warning signs in relationships and work toward fixing them.

Each of us is not a solo instrument. We’re more like a choir or an orchestra with several voices. What is your mind saying? What is your heart saying? What is your body saying? What is your ‘gut’ saying? For example: My mind is saying ‘definitely leave her,’ but my heart says ‘I really love her.’ Let these different voices or parts of you co-exist and speak to one another. In this way, you will find an answer that comes from your whole self.

4. Develop and cultivate compassion.

Practice observing yourself and your partner without judging. Part of you might judge, but you don’t have to identify with it. Judging closes a door. The opposite of judging is compassion. When you are compassionate, you are open, connected, and more available to dialoging respectfully with your partner. As you increasingly learn to see your partner compassionately, you will have more power to choose your response rather than just reacting.

5. Create a “we” that can house two “I’s”.

The foundation for a thriving, growing, mutually-supportive relationship is to be separate and connected. In co-dependent relationships, each person sacrifices part of him or her self, compromising the relationship as a whole. When you are separate and connected, each individual “I” contributes to the creation of a “we” that is stronger than the sum of its parts.

The differences between you and your partner are not negatives. You don’t need to be with someone who shares all of your interests and views. We may sometimes fear that these differences are incompatibilities, but in fact, they’re often what keeps a relationship exciting and full of good fire.

6. Partner, heal thyself.

Don’t expect your partner to fill your emotional holes, and don’t try to fill theirs. Ultimately, each of us can only heal ourselves. Your partner, however, can be supportive as you work with yourself, and vice versa. In fact, living in a loving relationship is healing in and of itself.

7. Ask questions when you’re unsure or are making assumptions.

All too often, we make up our own stories or interpretations about what our partners’ behavior means. For example: “She doesn’t want to cuddle; she must not really love me anymore.” We can never err on the side of asking too many questions, and then listen to the answers from your whole self — heart, gut, mind and body. Equally important is to hear what’s not being said — the facts and feeling that you sense might be unspoken.

8. Make time for your relationship.

No matter who you are or what your work is, you need to nurture your relationship. Make sure you schedule time for the well-being of your relationship. That includes making “playdates” and also taking downtime together. Frequently create a sacred space together by shutting off all things technological and digital. Like a garden, the more you tend to your relationship, the more it will grow.

9. Say the “hard things” from love.

Become aware of the hard things that you’re not talking about. How does that feel? No matter what you’re feeling in a situation, channel the energy of your emotions so that you say what you need to say in a constructive manner.

01 Mratinje Dam

The Mratinje Dam is a concrete arch dam in the canyon of the Piva River in Montenegro. The dam is 220 metres (720 ft) high, one of the highest in Europe. The dam is 268 metres (879 ft) long and 4.5 metres (15 ft) thick at the crest, while it is 30 metres (98 ft) long and 36 metres (118 ft) thick at the base. The foundations go as deep as 38 metres (125 ft) into the ground. 820,000 cubic metres (1,070,000 cu yd) of concrete and 5,000 tonnes of steel were built into the dam.

10. Annapurna

The tenth tallest mountain is the Annapurna which comes in at 26,545 feet high. It is located in the Himalayan mountain range in north central Nepal and its parent peak is the Cho Oyu. The name Annapuran is Sanskrit and means “full of food”, but it is normally translated to mean the “Goddess of the Harvests”. This mountain was the first 8,000 metre peak to be climbed and it was done by a French expedition that was lead by Maurice Herzog. The first American team to climb it was led by Arlene Blum.

9. Nanga Parbat

The Nanga Parbat is 26,660 and its name literally means Naked Mountain. It is the western anchor of the Himalayan mountain range and the Indus river skirts around it before it runs into the plains of Pakistan. It is well known for being a difficult mountain to climb and numerous people have died trying. In the 20th century it earned the nickname “killer mountain” and it has never been climbed during the winter. The most unique thing about this majestic mountain is the way that it towers over the rest of the area around it and if you look at it from the south it is often said that it has the highest mountain face in the world. It also has one of the most prominent peaks according to a top twenty list where it comes in the 14 th position.

8. Manaslu

Manaslu is number eight on the list with its towering 26,759 feet. It is located in the west central area of Nepal and is part of the Nepalese Himalayas. It’s name means “Mountain of the Spirit” and comes from a Sanskrit word that means either “soul” or “intellect”. The first successful climb of this beautiful mountain was done by a Japanese expedition that was lead by Toshio Imanishi on May 9, 1956. This mountain appears to be a wall of snow and ice that hangs in the sky. Three sides of it fall in steps down to a terrace.

7. Dhaulagiri L

The Dhaulagiri l stands a proud 26,795 feet at its highest peak. The first people to climb this beast of a mountain were from a Nepali/Austrian/Swiss expedition. The mountains name means Dazzling, white, beautiful mountain in Sanskrit. It is the highest point of the river basis Gandaki. The Kali Gandaki River flows between this mountain and Annapurna l and it is said to be the deepest river in the world. Total there have been 358 successful climbs and 58 deaths on this mountain as of 2006.

6. Cho Oyu

This mountain’s name stands for “Turquoise Goddess” is 26,795 feet high which places it as the sixth highest mountain in the world. It is located on the Tibet-Nepal border. A climb up it was first attempted by Eric Shipton and it was financed and organized in 1952. It was canceled because of a danger for avalanches and other technical difficulties. In 1954, the first successful trek up the mountain happened on October 19. It was climbed by Herbert Tichy and others via the North West ridge of the mountain. At that time it was only the 5 th mountain over 8,000 metres high to be climbed.

5. Makalu

This massive mountain is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas and it is 27,825 feet high at its peak. It sits 19 km southeast of Mount Everest, right on the border between China and Nepal. Makalu is a peak that is isolated from others and looks like a four-sided pyramid. It also has two other peaks including the Makalu ll and the Kangchungtse. The first attempt to climb it was made by Americans and it was lead by William Siri during the spring of 54’. In the fall a French reconnaissance expedition completed the climb to a subsidiary summit. The mountain itself was first climbed successfully on May 15, 1955 by a team with Lionel Terray.

The word Lhotse means South Peak and it is connected to Everest by the South Col. It stands 27,940 above the ground at the highest peak. This majestic mountain is located on the border between Nepal’s Khumbu region and Tibet. The first climb attempt was in 1955and it was lead by Norman Dyhrenfurth. It was not climbed until May 18, 1956 by a Swiss team that included Fritz Luchsinger and Ernst Reiss. Statistics for the mountain as of December 2008 show that 371 people have successfully climbed Lhotse and 20 have lost their lives trying.

This mountain is called the “Five Treasures of Snow” because of its five peaks and at its highest it is 28,169 feet above sea level. It has been worshipped by both the people of Sikkim and the people of Darjeeling. It is on the border between Sikkim and Nepal. Others tried before but it was successfully climbed the first time by George Band and Joe Brown on May 25, 1955. It is also rumored to be where the “Kangchenjunga Demon” calls home. It is a rakshasa or yeti type of creature that has become a very popular myth. Other legends state that there is a hidden valley of immortality located within its slopes.

The K2 has a variety of names including Mount Godwin-Austen, Ketu/Kechu, and Chhogori/Qogir. It is located on the border between Baltistan and China and comes in as the second tallest mountain in the world at 28,251 feet at its highest peak. It is also called Savage Mountain because it is extremely difficult to climb. It has the second highest fatality rate and it has never been climbed in the winter. It is more difficult to reach its peak from the China side of the mountain, so it is usually done by starting out on the Pakistani side. It was first climbed by an Italian expedition on July 31, 1954. It was a climb lead by Ardito Desio and two others. A second successful climb did not happen until 23 years later.

It was actually two teams that would attempt it. The first team got within 330 ft of the summit but oxygen became a problem so they turned back. Two days later the second team went up an on May 29, 1953 the team reached summit at 11:30am local time. Most climbers spend a lot of time within what is called the death zone of the mountain. This area has very low temperatures which could result in slipping and frostbite. It also has very high winds and very little atmospheric pressure which means climbers have only about a third of the amount of oxygen that our body’s are use to. Many climbers have spent twelve hours trying to walk 1.07 miles through the death zone. This is why most climbs require oxygen tanks and masks to help climbers through it, but they still have to deal with the cold and possible frostbite to all exposed areas.

Obama attended the Harvard Law School, in 1988. Then, he was chosen as the editor of the prestigious Harvard Law Review, and further became the journal’s president during his second year in law school. In January 2005, Obama was proclaimed as a senator in the United States. Thus, he became known as the only member of the Senate who was a black caucus. It is the fourteenth-largest city in the European Union. Its being the historical capital of Bohemia attracts thousands of tourists every year. Monuments, buildings and museums architectures are based on Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance eras styles. That is why alleyways and cobbled streets add a sense of nostalgia when walking on them. Several cultural attractions living up the city such as the Prague Castle, the Jewish Quarter, the Lennon Wall, the Charles Bridges and Pétrin hill.
