7-Up was invented in 1929 by Charles Leiper Grigg. Its original name was ‘Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda’. This name didn’t stick for long, main reason is nobody could remember the name. You’d have to write it down. If you asked for some in a shop, finally managing to get it all out and they said ‘Sorry we haven’t got any’, how much would that piss you off!
It was soon changed to ‘7-Up Lithiated Lemon Soda’, then in 1936 it was shortened to just 7-Up. So that’s 30 letters, down to just 3 :)
Oh and while were on the subject of 7-Up… You might have heard a rumour about the red dot in the 7-Up logo is there because the inventor was albino and have red eyes… this is false. There are photographs of him, and he isn’t albino.
There are (or were) seven ingredients in 7Up.
The original 7Up bottle was seven ounces.
Mr. Grigg saw a cattle brand that looked like 7 Up, and he liked it enough to name his soda after it.
Mr. Grigg named his new soda after a popular card game at the time that was also called 7up.
